Our story

From an NTNU lab to a full inspection platform on five continents.

ScoutDI was founded in November 2017 as a spin-off from NTNU’s Department of Engineering Cybernetics and the AMOS centre of excellence in Trondheim, Norway. The founders had spent years researching autonomous navigation for drones in GPS-denied environments, and saw the work could go beyond academia into the most dangerous places in industry.

The thesis: replace scaffolding, rope access and human entry into confined industrial spaces with a drone that navigates inside the asset using onboard 3D LiDAR. No external positioning. No line of sight.

The first Scout 137 was a tethered drone built for marine cargo tanks, refinery columns and power plant penstocks. As more fleets entered service, we built Scout Portal — the cloud platform that turns every flight into reviewable, shareable inspection data.

Today the offering is a complete inspection ecosystem: the Scout 137 Gen 3 drone, payloads for visual, ultrasonic and LiDAR capture, Scout Portal, Scout Operator and Companion on the inspection tablets, and Scout Services. It flies inside assets on five continents, delivered through our global partner network and supported from Trondheim.
